My thoughts on “Snape’s worst memory”.
I’m rereading “Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix” and I’ve just finished “Snape’s worst memory”. Here are my thoughts on it:
- James doodling Lily’s name. When have you ever seen a guy do that? That’s the sort of thing girls do when they’re basically swooning over someone, not something a guy does when he just wants to get in some girls pants. I think this shows that James was very much in love with Lily at that point. A lot of FanFiction likes to say that James was merely infatuated with her back then but I strongly disagree; you wouldn’t see James Potter doodling the initials of just some girls name.
- Lily, whose furious expression had twitched for an instant as though she was going to smile, said, “Let him down!” This happened after Snape hexed James so he got a gash on his face. James then used the levicorpus jinx on him and started “roaring with laughter” with Sirius and Peter at the sight of Snape’s dirty underpants. This is probably one of the most important and ignored moments in the Jily fandom. Lily wouldn’t have to suppress smiles if she didn’t find the situation at least slightly amusing. Lily wouldn’t find it funny at all if Snape hadn’t given her many reasons for her to be weary of him. Oh, and notice how she had to keep herself from smiling just when James started laughing. I think there’s a huge possibility that Lily found James’s laughing cute.
- Harry noticed that his father had a habit of rumpling up his hair to keep it from getting too tidy, and he also kept looking over at the girls by the water’s edge. Err! Wrong, Harry. James kept looking over at Lily, sitting by the water. Several times.
- James’s free hand immediatly jumped to his hair. A little further down the page.. “All right, Evans?” said James and his voice was suddenly pleasant, deeper, more mature. Seriously, James is just a 15 year old boy showing off. Yes, he definitely thought it was funny to stir up trouble with Snape, but I’m also pretty sure he did it because he wanted an excuse to talk to Lily because he didn’t know how to approach her.
- “LEAVE HIM ALONE!” Lily shouted. She had her own wand out now. James and Sirius eyed it warily. James and Sirius had a lot of respect for Lily. They merely laughed when Snape tried to pick up his wand. I’m sure they had been at the receiving end of her curses often enough to know not to mess with her.
- “I don’t need help from filthy little mudbloods like her!” Ugh. I had forgotten how disgusting that line was. The fact that someone would ship Lily and Snape after this is fucking sickening. The argument they most often use in Snape’s defence is that “Snape was humiliated, he would have lashed out at anyone, he didn’t really mean it”, etc. Well, you know what? That doesn’t matter. No decent human being would ever call their friend something like that. Snape redeemed himself later on by protecting Harry, but to those who say that he deserved a second chance with Lily.. no. Just no. He had gotten plenty of chances. Snape chose the dark arts over Lily and there’s no getting around that. Here’s a little eye opener I once found someone say in a post about Lily and Snape: “Imagine if you were a black girl living in the 1960’s in America and your best mate, who happened to be white, started hanging out with a group of rich racist supremacists who openly bullied other black people and who were almost definitely in the KKK. He insists that he didn’t care about all that, and you are different. Then one day, while he was being picked on by some other white kids, you ran to his defence and he said that he didn’t need any help from a dirty nigger like you. You then find out later that he has joined the KKK and has been considering it for a while. What would you do?”
- “What?” yelped James. “I’d NEVER call you a-you-know-what!” Mudblood is such an appalling word to James that he can’t even say it. Snape might have regretted his words to Lily, but it never even occurred to James to call her something like that. It’s easy to see who the better man is.
End of rant.
